Fiat Ducato rough starting high fuel consumption

I'm having some trouble with my 2023 Fiat Ducato, gasoline engine. It's got 228920 km on the clock. Lately, it's been starting pretty rough, and I've noticed my fuel consumption is way up. Engine power feels lower than usual, and the idling is uneven, sometimes stalling completely. Any ideas? I suspect it might be a dirty injection valve.

Summary of the thread

A 2023 Fiat Ducato with high mileage is experiencing rough starting, increased fuel consumption, reduced engine power, uneven idling, and occasional stalling. The suspected cause is a dirty or clogged fuel injection valve. The recommended solution is to consult a qualified technician for a professional cleaning and diagnosis, as improper handling could worsen the issue. After replacing the defective injection nozzle, the vehicle's performance improved significantly.

Your description resembles an issue I encountered with my 2018 Opel Insignia, which is also a gasoline engine. The symptoms you describe – poor starting, elevated fuel consumption, diminished engine power, unstable idling, and occasional stalling – are all indicative of potential problems with the fuel injection system. In my case, a clogged fuel injector was indeed the culprit. Have you observed any unusual emissions or noticed any peculiarities in the engine's performance at higher RPMs?

Thanks for the quick reply! The emissions do seem a bit higher than normal, and when accelerating, the performance is not consistent, feels like it is struggling sometimes. Could you please elaborate on what steps you took to resolve the issue with your Opel? Did you attempt any DIY cleaning or go straight to a mechanic?

Given the elevated emissions and inconsistent performance you've described, it seems increasingly likely that the issue stems from a compromised fuel injection system. In my situation with the Opel, I initially considered attempting a DIY cleaning procedure. However, upon closer inspection and consultation with a trusted mechanic, I opted for a professional cleaning and diagnosis. Considering the intricacies of modern fuel injection systems and the potential for exacerbating the problem through improper handling, I would strongly advise against attempting a DIY repair. I would recommend consulting a qualified technician. In my case, the repair costs amounted to approximately 480€ excluding VAT.

Appreciate the advice. I'll take it to a workshop. Turns out it was indeed a defective injection nozzle, most likely from clogging. Had them replaced; total cost was 515€. Runs like new now, thanks again!
