Thanks. How do I check the temperature readings, or what constitutes 'way off'?

I didn't do it myself. A friend with a diagnostic tool read the values; they were completely erratic. I'd say get it checked at a workshop; they'll pinpoint it quickly.

I took the car to a trusted workshop, and as suspected, the intake air temperature sensor was defective. The repair cost was 155€. The issue is resolved.

Sounds familiar! I had almost the exact same symptoms in my old Opel Astra. Engine light, sluggish performance... Drove me nuts! Have you checked the sensor's temperature readings? Are they way off?
