Fiat Mobi Gear Shift Indicator Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2018 Fiat Mobi is experiencing issues with its gear shift indicator, including erratic shifting, gear engagement problems, and grinding noises. The gear selection display is non-functional, and a diagnostic scan revealed a defective control unit code. A similar issue in another vehicle was traced to a faulty sensor, but in this case, the control unit was confirmed to be defective and is being replaced to resolve the problem.

Interesting! Which sensors exactly were you referring to? I was leaning towards the control unit itself being bad, but maybe it's worth digging into the sensors first. Any idea where those sensors are typically located on the transmission?

In my case, it was the speed sensor on the transmission output shaft. Given your symptoms, it could be a similar sensor or perhaps the selector lever position sensor. However, considering the stored error code points to the control unit, I would suggest taking it to a qualified workshop for a thorough diagnostic. They have the tools and expertise to pinpoint the exact cause. I hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for the insight! You've confirmed my fears about the control unit. I took it to a shop and you were right, the affected control unit was indeed defective, they are replacing it. Costing me around 1000€, but at least it should resolve the issue. Appreciate the input!

That sounds frustrating. I had a similar issue with my 2016 Volvo XC60. The symptoms weren't exactly the same, but the root cause was a faulty sensor in the transmission control module. It caused erratic shifting and the car would occasionally refuse to shift at all. The error memory filled up quickly. Have you checked the sensors?
