Fiat Petra Generator Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Fiat Petra with a diesel engine is experiencing reduced power, a warning light, starting difficulties, and flickering lights. These symptoms suggest a potential issue with the generator, also known as the alternator. A failing generator could cause low battery voltage, leading to these problems. It is recommended to have the generator inspected and possibly replaced by a qualified workshop to resolve the issues.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I haven't personally tested the battery voltage, as I lack the necessary equipment and the confidence to do so correctly. However, if the battery voltage is indeed low, could that also explain the error stored in the memory? Is it possible that a failing generator is the root cause of all these interconnected issues?

Yes, a failing generator is highly likely to be the root cause. The error code, low voltage, weak lights, and starting problems all align with that diagnosis. While it's good to confirm with a voltage test, given the combination of symptoms, I would recommend taking it to a qualified workshop to have the generator thoroughly inspected and replaced. It's probably a better option than attempting a repair yourself without proper tools or expertise.

I appreciate your diagnosis! It confirms my initial fears, I'll bring my Petra to the workshop and have them check the generator. Just got the final repair bill for 960€ - a new generator and installation. Thanks again for your guidance!

The symptoms you describe, particularly the reduced power, warning light, and starting issues, do point towards a potential issue with the generator, or alternator as it's sometimes known. Weak lights would further suggest this. Have you tested the battery voltage while the engine is running? It should be above 13.5V, ideally closer to 14V. If it's significantly lower, that strengthens the suspicion of a faulty generator.
