I have consulted the owner's manual and the wiring diagram, but I'm still uncertain whether the fuel sensor has its own fuse or if it's on a shared circuit. Could the ECU be the problem instead?

Given the ambiguity surrounding the fuse configuration and the potential involvement of the ECU, it may be prudent to consult a qualified automotive technician. They will possess the necessary diagnostic tools and expertise to accurately pinpoint the source of the malfunction and provide an effective solution. Going to a workshop is advisable.

It turned out to be a defective fuel level sensor, easily replaceable after diagnosis (cost: 52€).

While I am not intimately familiar with the specific fuse layout of the 2014 Fiat Scudo, it is certainly possible that a defective fuse is the root cause of your fuel level sensor malfunction. Have you consulted your vehicle's owner's manual or a wiring diagram to find the location of such a fuse?
