Fiat Scudo Idle Problem

My 2003 Fiat Scudo with a gasoline engine is giving me fits. It's got 177076 km on the clock. The check engine light is on, and the error memory indicates a problem with the idle air control valve. The most annoying thing is the engine stalls at idle! I've visually inspected the intake, and it appears heavily contaminated. Has anyone experienced anything similar, and could this contamination truly be the culprit?

Summary of the thread

A 2003 Fiat Scudo with a gasoline engine is experiencing stalling at idle, with the check engine light indicating an issue with the idle air control valve. The intake appears heavily contaminated, which could be contributing to the problem. Suggested solutions include cleaning the throttle body and checking for vacuum leaks, but due to the complexity, a workshop visit is recommended. The workshop confirmed the intake contamination and faulty idle air control valve, resolving the issue by cleaning and replacing the necessary parts.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Stalling at idle and an idle control valve error definitely point to intake issues. Is the throttle body gunked up? Have you tried cleaning it, or checking for vacuum leaks around the intake manifold? Those could also cause similar symptoms. What error code exactly are you getting?

I haven't checked the exact error code, but I did notice a lot of grime around the throttle body. I haven't attempted cleaning it myself, as I am afraid to screw something up. I can check for vacuum leaks, but where should I be looking specifically?

Okay, if you're not comfortable cleaning the throttle body, I understand. Vacuum leaks can be tricky to pinpoint without the right tools. Given the age of your Scudo and the symptoms, it's probably best to take it to a workshop. They can properly diagnose the issue, clean the intake, and replace the idle air control valve if needed. It's better to be safe than sorry.

I took your advice and brought my Scudo to a workshop. As suspected, the intake was heavily contaminated, and the idle air control valve was faulty. They cleaned everything and replaced the valve. The final bill came to 425€. Thank you so much for the advice. It helped me narrow down the problem and avoid unnecessary repairs!
