Fiesta Camshaft Sensor Issue

I'm having a real headache with my 2002 Ford Fiesta, gasoline engine. It's got about 58403 km on the clock. Lately, it's been starting really poorly, and the engine power feels way down. Plus, I plugged in an OBD reader and it's showing an error stored in the error memory. I think it might be the camshaft sensor, maybe a dodgy cable or plug connection? Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

A 2002 Ford Fiesta with a gasoline engine was experiencing poor starting and reduced engine power, with an OBD error suggesting a camshaft sensor issue. The problem was suspected to be related to a faulty camshaft sensor or a connection issue. It was advised to have the vehicle checked by a professional due to the potential complexity and risk of incorrect timing. The issue was confirmed to be a defective camshaft sensor cable, which was replaced, resolving the problem.

I had a similar issue with my Fiesta, I think it was a sensor problem. Does it feel like it's rough idling at all, or like the timing is off? Could be crankshaft related too. You mentioned an error code - does it specifically point to the camshaft position sensor, or is it something more generic? Could also be a check engine light?

Thanks for getting back to me! Yeah, it is idling a little rough now you mention it. The error code does seem to be pointing towards the camshaft position sensor. I'm not very experienced with this, is it something I can solve myself?

Okay, given the rough idling and the specific error code, it really does sound like the camshaft sensor. While theoretically you could replace it yourself, without proper diagnostic tools and experience, you might introduce new issues or not fully resolve the problem. Remember, incorrect timing can seriously damage your engine. I had this issue once before, and it's just not worth doing it yourself. I'd recommend taking it to a reputable workshop.

Appreciate the advice! Took your advice and had it checked out at a local shop. You were spot on! Turned out to be the camshaft sensor, with a defective cable. They replaced it, and it cost me about 95€. Runs like a dream now. Thanks again!
