Fiesta Diesel DPF Exhaust Pressure Low
Summary of the thread
The core problem is a technical issue with a 2001 Ford Fiesta diesel engine, characterized by a warning light, reduced engine power, smoke during acceleration, and a strong exhaust odor, with the diesel particulate filter (DPF) exhaust pressure being abnormally low. The suspected cause is a faulty exhaust back pressure sensor, which might prevent the car's computer from initiating DPF regeneration. Suggested solutions include confirming the sensor's condition and ruling out a clogged DPF or exhaust leak through a professional diagnostic check at a workshop.

I haven't forced a DPF regeneration, as I didn't want to make things worse with a potentially faulty sensor. I don't have the equipment to get precise sensor readings, but the diagnostic tool shows consistently low pressure, even under different engine loads. Do you think a defective exhaust back pressure sensor is most likely, or could it be something else?

Based on your description, it sounds very similar to what I experienced. While I can't be 100% certain without proper diagnostics, a faulty pressure sensor is likely. Before replacing parts, I'd recommend a workshop to confirm the sensor and rule out a clogged DPF or exhaust leak.

Thanks for the help. I'll book a workshop for a diagnostic check of the exhaust system. The repair, including the new sensor and labor, will be 245€. Your insights helped a lot.

I had a similar problem with my Fiesta (also diesel). Same warning light, sluggish acceleration, and a whiff of fumes. Have you tried forcing a DPF regeneration? If the pressure sensor is faulty, the car's computer probably won't start the regeneration itself. That could explain the symptoms. What readings are you getting from the sensor?
