Fiesta EGR Valve Smoke Hissing

I'm having serious issues with my 2009 Ford Fiesta (diesel engine). It's got about 70k km on it. Lately, the engine power is way down, and the check engine light is constantly on. When I accelerate, it feels like I'm driving a steam train – lots of smoke and a really rough, jerky ride. Plus, I'm burning through gas like crazy and there's this loud hissing noise. Could it be the EGR valve? Anyone experienced something similar?

Summary of the thread

A 2009 Ford Fiesta with a diesel engine is experiencing reduced power, constant check engine light, excessive smoke, a rough ride, and a loud hissing noise. These issues are suspected to be related to a defective EGR valve, potentially causing a vacuum leak and affecting vehicle emissions. The suggested solution is to have the vehicle checked by a workshop, where it was confirmed that the EGR valve was faulty, leading to necessary repairs.

Sounds familiar! I have a Fiesta too. Reduced power and the check engine light… yep. But smoke? Hissing? Those weren't happening with mine. Was it doing that before the other problems?

Good question! No, the smoke and hissing are new. I thought it might be related, like a domino effect from a bad EGR valve messing with vehicle emissions or the catalytic converter. Or maybe a vacuum leak amplified by the EGR issue? Is it still safe to drive?

Ah, okay, the extra symptoms do make it sound worse. Mine never got that bad, just rough idle and poor fuel economy. Given the smoke and hissing, I'd definitely get it checked out by a workshop ASAP. Probably not a good idea to keep driving it like that. Do you know when you last had your car serviced?

I appreciate the advice. I took it to the workshop, and you were right – it was a defective EGR valve! The hissing was indeed related, a vacuum leak caused by the faulty valve. Repair ended up costing me around 355€. Hopefully, this fixes everything!
