Fiesta Transmission Problems
Summary of the thread
A 2001 Ford Fiesta owner reported transmission issues, including unresponsive paddle shifters, rough shifting, grinding noises, and emergency mode activation. These symptoms suggested a potential problem with the transmission control unit (TCU). After consulting with others who experienced similar issues, it was confirmed that the TCU was the cause. The problem was resolved by replacing the TCU, restoring smooth operation.

Interesting. Was it definitely the ECU in your case? Did it cause the gearbox to go into emergency mode as well?

Yep, that was the culprit. The emergency mode was triggered by the faulty ECU readings. Best to get it checked at a workshop, they can pinpoint it properly.

Thanks for the info! I took it to a workshop. Turns out it was indeed the transmission control unit. Cost me about 1000€ to get sorted, but at least it's running smoothly again now.

Sounds rough. I had similar symptoms with my old Renault Megane, though it was a few years newer. Paddle shifters went haywire, and the gear changes felt like they were being done with a sledgehammer. An ECU problem was suspected.
