Figo NOx Catalyst Error

My 2011 Ford Figo, gasoline engine, has the check engine light on with a NOx storage catalyst aging error. Plus, there's a smell of exhaust leak on startup. Air filter is okay, but car diagnostics aren't my strength. Mileage is only 37705 km. Any ideas?

I had a similar issue with my Figo. Check the exhaust system, especially around the catalytic converter. A leak there can cause problems with the NOx catalyst, like confusing the sensors.

When you say 'around the catalytic converter,' are we talking about obvious rust holes, or something more subtle that I'd need a mechanic's inspection mirror to find? I'm intermediate at best when it comes to cars.

Could be obvious, but also could be a hairline crack or a loose joint. Best bet is to get it on a lift and have a professional take a look. Those nitrogen oxides are nasty and you don't want to breathe them! That's how it was on my car, it can be easily solved, the repair cost me 265€.

That's the plan then. I'll get it to a shop and have them check the exhaust system thoroughly. It was the exhaust manifold that was leaking. Replaced and the error code is gone. I'd never have thought of that
