Fiorino Jerking and Stalling

Good day. My 2005 Fiat Fiorino diesel is jerking when accelerating, and the check engine light is on. It's got 111594 km on the clock. There was an error stored, but I'm unsure of its relevance. The engine seems to have lost power and sometimes stalls when idling. The engine runs rough, and there's a strong exhaust smell. I suspect a vacuum leak, possibly around the car manifold. Any thoughts?

Summary of the thread

A 2005 Fiat Fiorino diesel is experiencing jerking during acceleration, a check engine light, power loss, stalling when idling, rough engine running, and a strong exhaust smell. The suspected cause is a vacuum leak, potentially around the intake manifold. It is suggested to inspect the manifold for scorching or damage, as a leak there can lead to misfires and rough running. Ultimately, the issue was confirmed to be a leaking intake manifold, which was repaired at a workshop, resolving the problem.

Hey there, I also drive a Fiorino, although I haven't had all those issues at once! The jerking and loss of power sound familiar, though. Have you checked the intake manifold itself? It's a common problem on these, especially the diesel versions. A leak there can cause all sorts of problems with manifold pressure, leading to engine misfires and rough running. Sometimes the gasket goes, other times the manifold itself can crack or warp, leading to what you called a vacuum leak. Give it a good look over for any signs of scorching or damage.

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm not entirely sure what scorching would look like on the intake manifold. Could you describe where I should be looking specifically, and what kind of damage I should be trying to spot? Also, if it IS the intake manifold, is that something I can replace myself, or am I better off taking it to a workshop? I'm reasonably handy, but I don't want to mess anything up worse.

Scorching would look like dark, burnt areas around the manifold, especially where it connects to the engine block. You might also see soot buildup. Honestly, given the range of symptoms you're experiencing, and especially the stalling, I'd recommend taking it to a trusted workshop. A leaking intake manifold can cause a whole host of other issues if not addressed properly, and without the right tools and knowledge, you could end up causing more damage than good. It sounds like a proper diagnosis is needed to rule out other potential causes before you start throwing parts at it.

Okay, I understand. Thank you so much for your advice! I've booked it in at a workshop. Turns out, it was indeed the intake manifold. It was leaking badly due to scorching, just as you suspected. The total repair cost, including parts and labor, came to 1180€. A hefty price, but at least it's running smoothly again!
