FiveHundred Crankshaft Camshaft Reference Value Error

Thanks for the quick response. I haven't inspected the wiring harness and connectors for corrosion, but I'll do that tomorrow. How significantly misaligned does the timing belt have to be to cause this error? Would a simple OBD2 reader identify this, or would I need a more sophisticated tool?

By 'significantly misaligned', I mean a tooth or two. That's enough to cause the reference value error, as the crankshaft and camshaft signals won't align as expected by the ECU. An OBD2 reader will only give you the error code itself, like P0016. It won't tell you if the timing is off. I'd go to a workshop and have them check it out. It's difficult to diagnose remotely without proper tools.

Thanks for the help. I'm taking it to a mechanic for a diagnosis. It turned out my crankshaft sensor was defective. The repair cost 340€. I'll post the final resolution.

I had a similar issue with my old Opel Astra, although it's a different engine and model. I was also getting the 'crankshaft to camshaft reference value' error. Did you check the wiring harness and connectors going to the crankshaft sensor? Mine turned out to be a corroded connector causing intermittent signal loss. Also, have you had any recent work done near the timing belt? Sometimes a slightly misaligned timing belt or chain can trigger this error.
