FJCruiser Fuel Pump Error

Esteemed members, I come to you with a heavy heart and a sputtering engine. I own a 2010 Toyota FJCruiser with a gasoline engine. Recently, it's been exhibiting some rather concerning symptoms. The engine struggles to start, sometimes refusing outright. When it does deign to run, it stalls at idle with alarming frequency. To add insult to injury, the check engine light has illuminated, accompanied by rough engine running and a noticeable increase in fuel consumption! I scanned the error memory and it returned a fuel pump error. Considering my background knowledge, I first inspected the cable and plug connections of the fuel pump, but all seems to be well. Has anyone experienced anything similar with their FJ?

I have an FJCruiser, and your description sounds eerily familiar to an issue I encountered some time ago. The symptoms you're describing – engine stall, check engine light, poor running – definitely point towards fuel delivery problems, and given the error code you retrieved, it does seem like a defective fuel pump. Did you check the fuel pump relay as well? Sometimes a faulty relay can mimic the symptoms of a bad fuel pump.

Thank you for your swift response! I appreciate the suggestion regarding the fuel pump relay. Could you elaborate on how you diagnosed the problem and what steps you took to resolve it? Any specific areas I should focus on when inspecting the relay?

In my case, the fuel pump was indeed defective, but before condemning it entirely, a qualified mechanic checked the voltage at the pump connector using a multimeter. A multimeter is a tool that measures voltage, current, and resistance in electrical circuits. He verified that the pump was receiving the correct voltage, ruling out wiring issues. Given that you already checked the connections and are still experiencing problems, it might be best to have a workshop do the same, or replace the pump.

I wanted to extend my sincere gratitude for your advice. Following our discussion and a thorough examination by a trusted mechanic, it was indeed confirmed that the fuel pump was the culprit. The final repair bill came to 95€, and now my FJCruiser runs like a dream!
