Flashing CEL and Stalling Audi A2: EVAP System Alert

Recently my check engine light started flashing and the engine keeps stalling when idle. I suspect the tank ventilation system or EVAP system might be acting up. Specifically looking at the purge valve as potential culprit. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms, and what was your repair experience? Running a 2000 Audi A2 gasoline with 157101 KM on the clock.

Having experienced similar issues with my 2003 Audi A4 2.0T, the symptoms you describe match what I encountered. The check engine light and stalling pointed to a clogged EVAP system, which turned out to be a serious automotive repair situation. The emission system diagnosis revealed multiple vacuum hoses were completely blocked with carbon deposits, and the fuel tank pressure sensor was giving false readings. The main purge valve was stuck open, causing irregular fuel vapor flow and engine performance issues. The repair required a complete cleaning of the ventilation system pathways and replacement of several deteriorated hoses. Most critically, the purge valve needed replacement as it was beyond restoration. This comprehensive fix resolved both the check engine warning and the idle stalling issues. Based on your description, recommend having the entire EVAP system inspected, particularly the connections between the fuel tank and engine compartment. The age of these Audi models makes them prone to this specific ventilation system failure. This isnt a repair to postpone, as it can lead to increased emissions and potential fuel system damage if left unaddressed.

Thanks for sharing those details about the EVAP system repair. My A2 had nearly identical symptoms and it also turned out to be tank ventilation issues. Quick question, do you remember approximately how much you paid for the complete fix? Also curious if youve had any related problems since the repair was done? The gas cap and pressure sensor on my car have been acting up lately so Im wondering if I should get those checked while its in the shop.

The total repair for my A4 EVAP system overhaul came to 175 Euro, mainly for fixing the clogged hoses and cleaning the ventilation pathways. The tank ventilation valve malfunction was successfully resolved during this service, and I havent experienced any similar issues since the repair six months ago. Given your concerns about the gas cap and pressure sensor, its definitely worth having those checked while the car is being serviced. The fuel tank pressure readings are crucial for proper EVAP system function. A faulty gas cap can trigger engine lights and cause the same symptoms to return, even after fixing the main problem. Since the repair, my engine runs smoothly at idle and the check engine light has stayed off. The purge valve works as intended now that the system is properly sealed and ventilated. Regular maintenance of these components helps prevent future EVAP system complications.

Just went to the mechanic last week to sort this out. The diagnostic confirmed our suspicions about the EVAP system, the purge valve was indeed the culprit. They found significant carbon buildup in the ventilation pathways too. Total repair cost came to 230 Euro, which included replacing the purge valve, cleaning the system, and a new pressure sensor since mine was showing inconsistent readings. They also checked the gas cap seal while they were at it, which thankfully was still good. The engine light cleared right after the automotive repair and the idle stalling completely stopped. Car runs much smoother now. Will definitely keep a closer eye on the emission system maintenance going forward. Really glad I didn't wait any longer to get it fixed.
