Flickering lights and weak battery in the 2017 BMW 5 Series petrol engine - experience and suggested solutions wanted

Hi everyone, I'm a bit worried about my 2017 BMW 5 Series petrol with a mileage of around 52486 km. During my last visit to the garage, I was asked to pay quite a lot and now I'm having problems with my vehicle again. The lights flicker or are dimmed and the battery seems rather weak when I start the engine. Has anyone had experience of a similar problem, could it be the vehicle battery temperature sensor? How did you solve this in the workshop and how much did it cost? I am grateful for any advice!

Summary of the thread

The 2017 BMW 5 Series is experiencing flickering lights and a weak battery, which may be due to a faulty battery temperature sensor. Similar issues in other vehicles have been resolved by replacing this sensor, which is not considered a major repair. The cost for this fix typically ranges from €120 to €155, depending on additional parts needed. Replacing the sensor has generally resolved the issue without recurrence.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey guys, I'm so grateful for your reassurance and all the information! Now I know that replacing the sensor is not a big deal. It's also encouraging to hear that it shouldn't be a recurring problem. I'm assuming then that I can expect to pay between €120 and €155, depending on whether other parts need replacing or not. I will take my BMW to the workshop and then report back to you how it turned out. Thanks again for your help, guys. Take care and have a safe journey! Cheers!

Hey, don't worry. I had a similar problem with my 2014 BMW 3 Series a few months ago. Both the lights flickering and the engine starting poorly could indicate problems with the battery or alternator. The garage checked the battery and starter on my car and ultimately it was a fault in the battery temperature sensor, as you suspected. They replaced the sensor and everything was fine again. It's not too serious a problem and should be quite easy to fix. So don't worry too much. Hope this helps!

Hey, thanks for the reassurance! As you describe it, it really does seem to be the temperature sensor. Do you happen to remember how much you paid the garage to replace the sensor? And has anything else come up with your car since the repair? Greetings!

Hey everyone, I'm new here. The price for my repair was just under €155 because the cable connection on the battery temperature sensor was also broken and had to be replaced. But since the replacement, everything has been running perfectly and the temperature sensor circus has not returned. By the way, I have an E-Class from Mercedes, not as wild as your BMW 5 Series, but it's fun too! So don't panic, it shouldn't be a recurring problem. Greetings back!

Hey, so I agree with the others, it looks like a problem with the temperature sensor. As far as mileage goes, it's not uncommon for problems like this to occur once the car has a few miles on it. But don't worry, replacing the sensor really shouldn't be a big deal. On my car, it cost me around €120. Since then, everything has been running smoothly again. Have a good trip and keep us up to date! Cheers!
