Interesting analogy! I did crank it up a bit last week, now that you mention it. How did you figure out it was the speaker? Any specific tests I could try before ripping the whole thing apart?

Well, after some fiddling, I noticed a slight buzzing sound when I put my ear right up to the speaker grille. The cone was shot, basically. But to be honest, unless you're really comfortable with car electrics, I'd suggest getting it checked out by a professional. Could save you a bigger headache down the line.

I appreciate the advice. Dropped it off at the shop today, and you were spot on - defective bass speaker. 280€ repair bill. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Sounds frustrating! I had a similar issue with my old BMW 3 Series. The whole system just went mute. Did you by any chance recently crank up the volume? It might be a defective bass speaker. It's like when your home hi-fi gives up the ghost after one too many loud parties.
