Fluence NOx catalyst aging and exhaust leak
Summary of the thread
A 2010 Renault Fluence owner is experiencing a check engine light issue, with diagnostics indicating an error related to NOx storage catalyst aging and an unusual smell of exhaust fumes. The problem is likely caused by an exhaust leak, possibly in the exhaust manifold or pipe before the NOx catalyst. The suggested solution is to inspect the exhaust system for leaks, particularly upstream of the NOx catalyst, and have it repaired at a workshop.

Thanks for the reply! I'm not really a car guy, so when you say 'upstream,' do you mean before the catalytic converter, closer to the engine?

Exactly. Any leak before the NOx catalyst throws off the whole system. Given the error code and the exhaust smell, it's likely a leak in the exhaust manifold or somewhere along the exhaust pipe before the catalyst. Honestly, it's probably best to get it checked out at a workshop. They can properly diagnose it and give you a quote.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I took it to the shop, and you were right, it was a leak in the exhaust system before the NOx catalyst. They fixed it for 265€. Hopefully, that's the end of it!

I had a similar issue with my Fluence. The NOx catalyst is part of the exhaust system that reduces NOx emissions, which are bad for air quality. Did you check for any visible damage to the exhaust pipes or catalytic converter? A leak upstream of the NOx catalyst will definitely trigger that error.
