Focus camshaft sensor error

Having an issue with my 2010 Ford Focus diesel. It's got about 198k km on the clock. Lately, it's been starting poorly, sometimes stalling at idle, and the check engine light is on. I've scanned it and it's throwing a camshaft sensor error. From what I've researched, the encoder wheel on the camshafts might be defective, causing ignition timing problems and engine misfires. Has anyone else experienced this? Any thoughts?

Summary of the thread

A 2010 Ford Focus diesel with 198,000 km is experiencing poor starting, stalling at idle, and a check engine light due to a camshaft sensor error. The issue may be caused by a defective encoder wheel on the camshafts, leading to ignition timing problems and engine misfires. The suggested solution involves replacing the camshaft sensor and addressing the encoder wheel defect, which was confirmed by a mechanic and repaired for 695€.

Oh my goodness, that sounds awful! I have a Focus too, though I can't remember the exact year right now, and I experienced something similar last year. The check engine light was constantly on, and the engine was really struggling. So you got the camshaft sensor error too? Gosh, I hope it's not too serious!

Thanks for the reply! When you experienced this, did replacing the camshaft sensor solve the problem, or was there more to it? I'm trying to avoid throwing parts at it without a clear diagnosis. Was the engine control affected?

Well, I'm not a mechanic or anything, so I can't say for sure. But in my case, it turned out to be a bit complicated. I ended up taking it to a workshop, and they sorted it out. They mentioned something about the crankshaft sensor as well, but honestly, it all went over my head. I would suggest that you go to a mechanic. Sorry, that I cannot help more!

Thanks, I appreciate you sharing your experience. I had it checked out by my local mechanic; turns out it was the camshaft sensor and, as suspected, a defective encoder wheel. Repair came to 695€. Hopefully, that sorts it for good!
