Focus diesel EGR valve issue
Summary of the thread
A 2011 Ford Focus diesel is experiencing reduced engine power, a check engine light, increased fuel consumption, rough running, smoke, jerking, and a hissing sound during acceleration. These symptoms suggest a potential issue with the EGR valve, which can cause such problems if defective or jammed. A mechanic confirmed the EGR valve was the cause, and replacing it resolved the issues.

Thanks for the tips! I haven't checked the catalytic converter or vacuum leaks yet. If it was a faulty EGR, how did you figure it out?

I didn't have smoke when accelerating, so it might be something else. My rough idle went away after replacing the EGR valve. I'd recommend taking it to a workshop.

Just wanted to let you know it was the EGR valve! A mechanic confirmed it was defective and jammed. The repair cost 355€ including parts and labor. Thanks for the help diagnosing it!

I also drive a Focus with a diesel engine. Have you considered the catalytic converter? I had similar symptoms a while back. Have you checked for any vacuum leaks?
