Focus DPF Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2012 Ford Focus diesel with 233,464 km is experiencing reduced engine power and smoke during acceleration, suspected to be due to a defective diesel particulate filter (DPF). Common symptoms of a blocked or failing DPF include reduced power, smoke, and decreased fuel efficiency, often accompanied by an illuminated engine light. A temporary fix might involve a DPF cleaning cycle, but replacement is often necessary for a long-term solution. A diagnostic check at a workshop is recommended to confirm the issue and prepare for a potential filter replacement.

Yes, the engine light is illuminated. I have not scanned for any sensor faults, though. I have observed a decrease in fuel efficiency, yes. What was the resolution in your case?

In my case, it was indeed the DPF. I initially tried a DPF cleaning cycle, but it only provided a temporary fix. Eventually, the filter needed replacement. Given the mileage and symptoms, a replacement is the likely solution. I recommend taking it to a workshop for a diagnostic check to confirm, but be prepared for a potentially costly filter replacement.

Thank you for the information. I took the vehicle to a workshop. A defective DPF was diagnosed. The repair, including filter replacement, cost 1550€.

I had a similar issue with my Focus, although it's a slightly different model year. Reduced power and smoke are classic symptoms of a blocked or failing DPF. A DPF, or Diesel Particulate Filter, traps soot from the exhaust. Is the engine light on? A sensor fault related to the DPF could also trigger these symptoms. Have you noticed any drop in fuel efficiency?
