Ford Edge Cylinder Pressure Fluctuation

I have a 2015 Ford Edge with a diesel engine and about 31578 km. Recently, I've noticed some cylinder pressure fluctuation, higher fuel consumption, reduced engine power, and the check engine light keeps coming on. I've checked the basics, but nothing obvious stands out. Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

A 2015 Ford Edge with a diesel engine experienced cylinder pressure fluctuation, higher fuel consumption, reduced engine power, and a persistent check engine light. Possible causes considered included issues with the turbocharger, head gasket, camshaft, or intake manifold. The problem was ultimately traced to a software issue misreading sensor data, which was resolved by reflashing the ECU at a workshop.

That sounds frustrating! I had a similar issue with my old BMW 3 Series, though the engine was petrol. Cylinder pressure fluctuations can be tricky. Have you considered the turbocharger or perhaps a head gasket issue? Although those are usually accompanied by other symptoms too. Spark plugs are unlikely with a diesel, but what about the camshaft or intake manifold? A consequential error resulting from another error is also a possibility. What have you checked so far?

Thanks for the suggestions. I haven't checked the turbocharger in detail, nor the head gasket. Given that it's a diesel, I assumed spark plugs were not the issue. What sort of things did you check on your BMW when you had the problem?

Well, with my BMW, the symptoms were very similar. I started by checking all the usual suspects: the intake manifold, fuel injectors, and all the sensors. Ultimately, it turned out to be a faulty sensor that was causing incorrect readings and throwing everything else off. Given the complexity of modern engines, and with the check engine light on, I'd strongly recommend taking it to a workshop with diagnostic equipment. They'll be able to pinpoint the exact cause of the pressure fluctuation.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. It turned out to be a software issue that was misreading the sensor data. A quick reflash of the ECU at the workshop solved the issue. The repair cost was 0€ under warranty.
