Ford Edge EGR Valve Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2016 Ford Edge with a diesel engine is experiencing reduced engine power, a check engine light, excessive smoke, rough running, increased fuel consumption, jerking during acceleration, and a hissing noise. These symptoms suggest a potential issue with the EGR valve, which may be malfunctioning and disrupting the engine's performance. It is recommended to have a qualified mechanic diagnose and repair the EGR valve to resolve the problem.

Thanks for the insight! The hissing sound appears to be coming from the top of the engine, the noise seems to be louder the more I accelerate. If it was the EGR valve what did you do, did you need any special tool?

Yes, that's exactly what I experienced. Given your mileage and the symptoms you described, there's a high probability the EGR valve is defective or jammed. I recommend taking it to a qualified mechanic to diagnose and repair it. They can properly test the valve and related components. Attempting a DIY repair without the right tools and knowledge could potentially cause further damage. The cost of having my EGR replaced cost approximately 355€.

Thanks a lot for confirming that. Sounds like I'm on the right track. I'll take it to a trusted mechanic and get the EGR valve checked out. Hopefully, that resolves the issue. I really appreciate your help!

I had a similar experience with my Edge. Reduced power, check engine light, the whole nine yards. It's quite likely the EGR valve. When that valve malfunctions, it can cause all sorts of problems with your engine's performance and emissions. The EGR valve's job is to recirculate exhaust gases back into the intake manifold to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. When it fails, it can stick open or closed, disrupting the air-fuel mixture and causing the issues you're seeing. Is the hissing sound from the engine compartment?
