Ford Edge Knocking Combustion

My 2018 Ford Edge with a gasoline engine is giving me trouble. It's got almost 98000 km, and I've noticed a nasty knocking sound, like pre-ignition, under load. I'm also getting reduced engine power, jerking when I accelerate, and smoke when I put my foot down! The check engine light is on, and there's an error stored. I'm guessing it's something to do with combustion, maybe deposits in the combustion chamber causing piston slap. Has anyone else experienced anything similar with their Edge?

Whoa, that sounds rough! I had something similar happen with my Edge (same generation). The jerking and knocking are telltale signs. Pre-ignition is when the fuel-air mixture ignites before the spark plug fires. Did you notice any change after filling up at a different gas station, or maybe after a longer period without driving the car?

Interesting! I have been using different gas stations from time to time. I also didn't drive for a longer period of time. Do you think those are the reasons for the knocking combustion? What did you do to solve the problem?

Well, in my case, after some research, it pointed towards carbon buildup in the combustion chamber. That's why I mentioned the fuel, sometimes cheaper gas contains additives that leave behind more deposits. What I did was take it to a shop. They checked the cylinder heads and did some engine tuning, a process of adjusting the internal parameters of an engine's electronic control unit (ECU) to optimise performance, and that cleaned things up and it has resolved the error. Seems like you should go to the workshop!

Thanks a lot! I appreciate the help and suggestions. I took the car to the workshop, and it turned out to be exactly what you said: deposits in the combustion chamber! They cleaned everything up with engine tuning, and now it runs like new! The bill came to 425€, which is a bit steep, but worth it to have my Edge back in top shape!
