Ford Explorer engine power loss
Summary of the thread
A 2007 Ford Explorer is experiencing engine power loss, increased fuel consumption, and a check engine light. The issue may be linked to a faulty exhaust temperature sensor, potentially caused by a leak in the exhaust system. It is suggested to have a professional inspect the vehicle to confirm the sensor's condition and locate any leaks. After professional assessment and repair, including sensor replacement and exhaust repair, the vehicle's performance improved significantly.

Yeah, now that you mention it, there are temperature fluctuations. It's not consistent though. Where exactly in the exhaust system should I be looking? Or is it something best left to a professional?

Given the temp fluctuations and your symptoms, a faulty heat sensor is a strong possibility. I'd say it's best to get it checked by a workshop. They can pinpoint the exact location of the leak and confirm if it's the sensor before suggesting a sensor replacement.

Thanks for the advice! Turns out you were right on the money. Took it to a workshop, and they found a leak in the exhaust causing the sensor to throw errors. New sensor and exhaust repair cost me 265€. Runs like a dream now!

Sounds familiar. I had a similar problem with my Explorer. Check engine light, power loss... was a pain. Any temperature fluctuation when it happens? It could well be related to the exhaust system components.
