Ford Flex AC Failure

My 2016 Ford Flex with the gasoline engine AC just quit. I'm getting a 'check engine' light, and the AC won't even kick on. Codes point to a refrigerant compressor failure. Could it really be the compressor at only 175,710 km? Or is it more likely the air conditioning control unit? Anyone else run into this?

I had a similar issue with my Flex. Did you check for obvious signs of a refrigerant leak before jumping to the compressor or control unit? Have you checked the pressure switches or the compressor relay? Those are often the culprits.

Good point! I did a quick visual check for obvious leaks, but didn't see anything glaring. As for the pressure switches and relay – where are those located, and is there a simple way to test them before I start tearing things apart?

On my Flex, the pressure switches were accessible near the condenser. Testing them involves checking for continuity when the system is calling for AC. The relay is typically in the engine compartment fuse box – check your owner's manual for the exact location. Based on what I experienced, and the error codes you're seeing, I'd seriously consider a visit to a trusted workshop. Could save you a lot of time and headache.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to my mechanic, and you were right. Turns out the air conditioning control unit was indeed defective. Ended up costing me 980€ to get it sorted, but at least the Flex is blowing cold air again!
