Ford Focus Crankshaft Camshaft Reference Value
Summary of the thread
A 2022 Ford Focus diesel with high mileage is experiencing reduced engine power, poor response, and increased fuel consumption, with diagnostics indicating a crankshaft to camshaft reference value fault. The suspected cause is a defective crankshaft sensor, but a stretched timing chain or a faulty camshaft sensor could also be responsible. It is recommended to have the timing chain inspected due to the mileage and consider professional diagnostics to accurately identify and resolve the issue. Ultimately, the problem was confirmed to be the crankshaft sensor, which was repaired at a workshop.

The timing chain hasn't been inspected or replaced while I've owned it. Given the mileage, should I have the timing chain checked before replacing the sensor? Could a defective cam sensor cause similar reference value deviations?

Given the high mileage and no timing chain inspection, I'd strongly advise having it checked for wear or stretch by a professional first. A stretched timing chain throws off the synchronization between the crankshaft and camshaft, leading to the reference value errors. A failing camshaft sensor could also cause similar issues. Given the complexity, I recommend a workshop visit.

Following your advice, I took it to a workshop. The crankshaft sensor was indeed the problem. It cost 340€ to diagnose and repair. Thanks for the help!

I've seen similar things. The engine control unit (ECU) is struggling to understand the correct position of the crankshaft relative to the camshaft, which is key for timing and fuel injection. A faulty crankshaft sensor is a good suspect. But has the timing chain ever been checked or replaced? These symptoms can also mean the timing chain is stretched.
