Ford Focus Exhaust Leak
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Ford Focus owner reported issues with a check engine light, rough engine performance, and a strong exhaust smell, suspecting a defective lambda sensor. Another owner suggested checking for exhaust pipe leaks and considering a faulty catalytic converter as potential causes. After further investigation, it was confirmed that the lambda sensor was indeed the problem, and replacing it resolved the issues.

Thanks for the suggestion! I did check the exhaust pipe, and there seems to be a leak somewhere along the line. But could a faulty catalytic converter cause all those symptoms at once?

In my case, it did. The leak was minor at first, but it got worse over time, triggering the engine light and affecting performance. I'd suggest taking it to a workshop to get it checked properly.

Thanks a lot! I suspected that a visit to the shop would be inevitable. Turns out it was indeed the lambda sensor. The repair set me back 375€, but at least the car is running smoothly again.

I also have a Ford Focus. I had a similar issue with the engine light and a rough idle. Did you check the exhaust pipe for leaks? Maybe the catalytic converter is faulty.
