Ford Freestyle engine running rough

I'm having issues with my 2006 Ford Freestyle with a gasoline engine. The engine runs rough, especially at idle, and the check engine light is on. When accelerating, the car sometimes jerks, and engine power is reduced. The vehicle has only 51189 km. Could a dirty spark plug be responsible or something more serious?

Combustion misfires can cause those symptoms. Rough idle, check engine light, jerking, and reduced power are all consistent with that. The check engine light likely stores a code indicating which cylinder is misfiring. Have you checked the error code? Also, when were the spark plugs last replaced?

I haven't checked the error code yet. I was hoping to get some insights before taking it to a mechanic. I cannot recall when the spark plugs were last replaced. Considering the mileage and the symptoms, do you think the spark plugs are the most likely culprit, or could there be other potential issues at play, such as a defective injection valve?

While spark plugs are a possibility, combustion misfires on your Ford Freestyle can also be caused by a defective fuel injector. Given all the symptoms and the age of your car, having a professional diagnose the issue is advisable. A faulty injection valve aligns well with the symptoms. I would suggest taking it to a trusted workshop.

I took the car to my local workshop today. It turned out to be a defective injection valve, as suspected. The final repair costs were 515€.
