Ford Freestyle exhaust temperature sensor issue
Summary of the thread
A 2005 Ford Freestyle experienced issues with the check engine light, reduced power, and increased fuel consumption. These symptoms were suspected to be caused by a faulty exhaust temperature sensor, potentially due to an exhaust leak. The sensor's malfunction can lead to incorrect temperature readings, affecting the engine's fuel-air mixture and timing. The problem was confirmed and resolved at a workshop, where both the sensor and the leak were addressed, restoring the vehicle's performance.

Thanks! What kind of temperature fluctuations should I look for? And does the exhaust temperature sensor need immediate attention, or can it wait?

Erratic readings are what I mean. The ECU uses that sensor to optimize engine performance and emissions. If the sensor is sending bad data, the car's computer won't be able to properly manage the engine, and that could lead to further issues. Best get it checked at a workshop, could be the sensor itself or an exhaust leak. They can run diagnostics to pinpoint the problem.

Understood. I took it to the workshop, and they confirmed the exhaust temperature sensor was faulty due to a small exhaust leak. The repair cost 265€. Everything is working now.

Hey, I had a similar issue with my Freestyle. Those symptoms point towards a faulty exhaust temperature sensor. A leak messes with the temperature readings the ECU gets, impacting fuel-air mixture and timing. Have you noticed any temperature fluctuation?
