Ford Fusion diesel exhaust smoke
Summary of the thread
A 2003 Ford Fusion diesel exhibited symptoms of reduced engine power, excessive exhaust smoke, and a strong exhaust smell, accompanied by a warning light. These issues were suspected to be related to the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and potentially the exhaust back pressure sensor. After consulting with others, the owner took the car to a workshop where the exhaust back pressure sensor was identified as the problem and replaced, resolving the issues.

Exhaust back pressure sensor? Where is that located, and how would I check it? I'm not super familiar with that part.

I'm not sure about the exact location on the 2003 model, but it's part of the exhaust system, near the DPF. I wouldn't recommend messing with it yourself if you're not comfortable. Just take it to a workshop.

Okay, thanks for the advice! I took it to the workshop, and you were spot on. It was the exhaust back pressure sensor, and it cost me 245€ to replace. Now it runs like a charm!

Sounds like DPF issues. I had similar symptoms on my Fusion. Have you checked the exhaust back pressure sensor?
