Ford Mondeo petrol engine 2016 overheats and loses coolant: possible radiator shutter problems and possible solutions

Coolant level low

Overheating

Hi guys, I have a problem with my 2016 Ford Mondeo petrol engine. It overheats quickly and the coolant level is very low. I think the problem could be caused by a defective radiator shutter. Have any of you ever had a problem like this and can give me some troubleshooting tips? How did you get it solved in the workshop? What experience have you had? I would really appreciate some advice!

Hi, I have some experience with cars and had a similar problem with my Ford Focus, which is two years older, so built in 2014, but the brands are similar, especially when it comes to problems. At my garage, the mechanic found that the wiring harness to the sensor was defective and corroded. This cost me 155 euros to fix and since then I have had no further problems with overheating or coolant levels. Now about your car, could you maybe give a bit more info? How often do you top up the coolant and how long does it take for it to overheat? This could help to better understand what the problem is.

Hey, thanks for your answer! I top up the coolant almost every day, it's really annoying. It doesn't take long and then the temperature is high again. At the last inspection 53812 km ago, the garage found nothing abnormal. I'm wondering whether this is perhaps just a small leak or actually a major problem. I would be interested to know what you think!

Hey, no problem at all! With daily topping up it does sound like a major problem, so a small leak sounds unlikely to me. It could be that the radiator itself is damaged, or maybe even the water pump is faulty. It could also be something to do with the radiator shutter, but normally that doesn't lead to that much water loss, rather less cooling capacity. Diagnosis from a distance is always difficult, of course. In any case, I would advise you to take the car to a garage as soon as possible before the engine is really damaged. I hope this helps you a little and you find a solution soon!

Thanks for your advice, it sounds really sensible! I'm really worried about my engine now. I guess I'll have no choice but to take the car to the garage. I just hope the repair won't be too expensive. I'll let you know when I have any news. Thanks again for your help!
