Ford Ranger Crankshaft Sensor Issue

My 2010 Ford Ranger with a gasoline engine has the check engine light on, reduced power, poor response, and increased fuel consumption. Diagnostics suggest a 'Crankshaft to camshaft reference value' problem. Could a defective crankshaft position sensor be the cause, especially with 83817 km? Concerned about potential misfires.

Reference value errors often point to sensor issues. Have you checked the wiring and connections to the crankshaft sensor? A loose or corroded connection can mimic a faulty sensor.

I have limited experience with automotive electrics. Could you elaborate on inspecting the wiring and connections to the crankshaft sensor? What tools or techniques should I use?

Given your limited experience and the potential for misdiagnosis, I'd recommend taking it to a trusted workshop. These symptoms combined with the error code strongly suggest a defective crank sensor, and the repair including sensor and labor will be around 340€.

Based on your recommendation, I took my Ranger to a reputable workshop. The crankshaft sensor was indeed defective. After replacement, the engine runs smoothly, and the check engine light is gone! Your guidance saved me considerable time and effort.
