Ford Windstar Camshaft Sensor Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2001 Ford Windstar is experiencing poor starting, occasional stalling at idle, and a check engine light, with a diagnostic code pointing to the camshaft sensor. The issue is suspected to be related to the encoder wheel on the camshafts. Replacing the camshaft sensor alone did not resolve the problem for another owner, suggesting the encoder wheel as the likely cause. The recommended solution is to have a professional mechanic inspect and potentially replace the encoder wheel.

Thanks for the quick response! The crankshaft sensor seems okay, at least according to the scanner. But the camshaft position does seem erratic when it's acting up. Was it the same for you? Did replacing the sensor fix it, or was it something else?

Yeah, sounds very familiar. Replacing the sensor didn't solve the issue for me. The erratic camshaft position points towards the encoder wheel being the culprit, as you initially suspected. I'd recommend taking it to a workshop; messing with the camshafts can be tricky.

Appreciate the confirmation. I was hoping it was just the sensor, but your experience seals it. I'll take it to my trusted mechanic. Turns out the bill was 695€, encoder wheel was indeed defective. Thanks again for the help!

I had something similar happen with my Windstar. Check engine light, stalling... nightmare. Was the crankshaft sensor acting up too? What's the camshaft position doing?
