Fortuner Gear Shift Indicator Failure

My 2011 Toyota Fortuner, diesel engine, has about 42455 km. The gear shift indicator in the instrument panel isn't working. I can't engage the gears properly. I'm experiencing implausible shifting, gearbox slippage, unclean shifts, and grinding noises. The error memory recorded an error related to this. The gear selection display in the speedometer is non-functional. Anyone seen this before? What could cause it?

The symptoms you describe strongly suggest an issue within the transmission control system. Problems such as implausible shifting behaviour or grinding noises are often caused by issues with the control unit like a defective sensor, or a broken wire. Has any maintenance been performed recently?

Thanks. No particular maintenance was performed recently. If it is a defective control unit, is there any risk to keep driving the car?

Given the symptoms you described, continued operation could exacerbate the problem and potentially cause further damage to the transmission. The erratic shifting and grinding noises indicate mechanical stress within the gearbox. The error memory storing a fault code related to the gear shift indicator also points towards a deeper issue. I recommend taking it to a workshop.

Thanks, that's very helpful. I took the Fortuner to a workshop. The mechanics confirmed a defective control unit, the repairing has an estimated cost of 1000€. Your insight has been invaluable!
