Fortuner preheating lamp stays on
Summary of the thread
A 2006 Toyota Fortuner with a diesel engine is experiencing issues where the preheating lamp remains on, the check engine light is illuminated, and smoke appears during acceleration. The suspected causes include a defective preheating control unit or a bad cable connection. A similar issue in another vehicle was resolved by checking the relay and connections in the vehicle heater circuit. The problem was confirmed to be the preheating control unit, and a workshop quoted a repair cost, including a new connector, to resolve the issue.

Thanks! I'm not very experienced. Could you be more specific about where to find the relay and what to look for?

The relay is usually near the battery or in the fuse box. If you're not familiar, it's best to take it to a workshop. A defective preheating unit can cause more damage if not handled incorrectly.

Thanks for the advice. I've taken it to a workshop and they've confirmed it's the preheating control unit. They quoted me 95€ for the repair, including a new connector, so I'm giving them the go-ahead. Hopefully, that'll sort it out.

Sounds familiar. Had a similar issue with my old Audi A4. The glow plug light stayed on, and it turned out to be a faulty connection in the vehicle heater circuit. Did you check the relay?
