Fortuner torque converter issue

Hi, I have a 2005 Toyota Fortuner, gasoline engine, with about 92k km. Recently, the check engine light and transmission indicator light came on. The gearbox is slipping and shifting roughly, and I'm hearing grinding noises when it changes gears. The error memory read out points to a defective automatic transmission torque converter lock-up clutch. Has anyone experienced similar issues?

Greetings! I recall wrestling with something akin to this in my old Saab 9-5, though it manifested a bit differently. The grinding sound is particularly concerning. When you say 'slipping,' could you elaborate? Does it happen at specific speeds or during certain gear changes? Did the error code specify anything beyond 'defective converter'? Sometimes the codes are rather vague and could indicate related issues like low transmission fluid or a faulty solenoid. But be warned, in my case, it was indeed the torque converter. Prepare for a hefty bill.

Thanks for the reply! When I say slipping, I mean that the engine revs up without a corresponding increase in speed, mostly when accelerating from a standstill or going uphill. The error code was pretty specific: 'Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off.' I checked the transmission fluid level, and it seems to be okay. Could it be anything else besides the converter itself?

Given the detailed error code and the symptoms you're describing, it certainly does seem like the torque converter is the prime suspect. While a faulty solenoid could theoretically cause similar issues, the 'stuck off' part of the error code strongly points to a mechanical failure within the converter itself. I'm afraid it's likely the converter. In my case with the Saab, the symptoms progressed rapidly after the initial warning signs. I would highly recommend taking it to a reputable workshop for a professional diagnosis and a detailed quote before proceeding. It's not a cheap repair.

Thanks for confirming my fears. I took it to a local workshop, and they've confirmed it's the torque converter. Quoted me 2120€ for the repair. Ouch! But at least I know what's wrong. Thanks again for the help!
