Fortuner Turbo Actuator Fault

Hi, I'm having some trouble with my 2023 Toyota Fortuner (gasoline engine). It's got about 173k km on it. Lately, the check engine light keeps popping up, and the engine feels sluggish. It's like it's lost a lot of power, especially when accelerating. I also noticed a whistling noise that turns into a loud hissing when I put my foot down. It even stalled on me a couple of times at idle. Fuel consumption seems higher too. Could it be a turbo issue?

Greetings, fellow Fortuner owner. The symptoms you describe – including the check engine light, diminished engine power, unusual auditory emissions (whistling/hissing), instances of engine stall during idle, and increased fuel consumption – collectively suggest a potential compromise within the turbocharger system. More specifically, these are consistent with a failure affecting the boost pressure regulation mechanism. Have you performed any preliminary diagnostics, such as inspecting the turbocharger's wastegate or actuator for mechanical integrity and freedom of movement? Furthermore, have you considered a compromised electrical connection or sensor pertaining to the boost control system?

Thanks for the detailed reply! I haven't really checked the wastegate or actuator myself. I'm not super confident poking around in there. But based on the symptoms, does it definitely sound like a turbo actuator fault? Is that something a regular mechanic could diagnose easily?

Based on the symptoms you have presented, the probability of a defective electrical bypass valve is substantially elevated. Given your expressed reservations about personally conducting diagnostic procedures, I would advise that you seek the expertise of a qualified automotive technician. A competent professional should possess the instrumentation and technical acumen to definitively ascertain the functionality of the boost pressure actuator and associated control circuitry. Proceeding with a professional diagnostic evaluation will afford you a more precise understanding of the underlying issue and preclude the potential for unintended complications arising from amateur repairs.

Thanks so much for the help! I took it to a workshop, and you were spot on. It was the boost pressure actuator. They replaced it for around 250€. Runs like new again!
