Summary of the thread
A 2020 Toyota Fortuner with a diesel engine is experiencing a water sensor malfunction, indicated by a check engine light and rough engine performance. Are you referring to unplugging the sensor and checking the pins for corrosion, or testing the sensor itself with a multimeter?

Yes, first visually inspect the connector and pins. If those look good, testing the sensor with a multimeter is the next logical step. However, judging by the symptoms and the error code, I would recommend visiting a trusted workshop.

I appreciate the advice. It seems I will need to visit the workshop as suggested. The cable harness to the sensor was indeed defective. The repair was exactly 95€, as initially quoted. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

I had a similar issue with my Fortuner. Check engine light, rough running, the whole shebang. I'd suggest taking a close look at the sensor itself. Are there any signs of corrosion or damage? It could save you some money on diagnostics.
