Function of the Ad-Blue system

Ad-Blue is a mixture of 32.5% synthetic urea and 67.5% demineralized water. It is used in modern diesel vehicles to reduce nitrogen emissions. Stored in a separate tank, Ad-Blue is injected into the exhaust system, where it produces ammonia through heat.

This reacts with the nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas and is converted into harmless nitrogen and water vapor in the SCR catalytic converter, enabling emissions to be reduced by up to 90%. As a rule, a warning message appears in the on-board computer when a remaining mileage of 2400 KM is reached. If the tank is empty, after several warnings have been displayed, the vehicle can no longer start.
