Function of camshaft sensor

A camshaft sensor is a usually cylindrical-looking component that is often located on the outside of the face cover (at the front of the engine under the valve cover). There, the sensor's job is to detect the speed and exact position of the camshaft.

This is usually done by the sensor scanning a sprocket on the camshaft. The engine control unit needs the data for precise fuel injection. Only then is safe, effective and environmentally friendly combustion possible. The smooth functioning of the camshaft sensor is therefore of great importance in several respects.
