Function of VANOS

The VANOS unit regulates camshaft spread based on engine speed, load and oil temperature. This enables fine-tuned adjustment that optimizes performance and increases efficiency. Depending on the version, both the intake and exhaust camshafts can be adjusted.

The intake VANOS primarily optimizes torque and power. As a result, either maximum torque or maximum power can be increased, depending on the cam contour. In addition, backflow of gases into the intake port is prevented. Depending on the engine speed, the adjustment of the closing timing is used for internal exhaust gas recirculation and engine torque increase or for power improvement.
