The swirl flap actuator on the intake manifold continuously regulates the swirl flaps and is monitored by a sensor. When the swirl flaps are closed, more fresh air is drawn in through the swirl duct, which increases air turbulence. In four-valve cylinder heads, one intake port is used as the "filling port" and the other as the "swirl port."
In part-load operation, the filling duct can be partially closed by a swirl flap, which distributes the air volume asymmetrically. This promotes greater swirl, improves air-fuel mixing at low engine speeds and increases the degree of filling of the combustion chamber at high engine speeds, which has a positive effect on fuel consumption.
