Freemont Diesel Starting Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2014 Fiat Freemont diesel was experiencing a starting issue where the engine cranked but wouldn't start. The suspected cause was loose battery cable connections, as they were recently adjusted. After cleaning and tightening the battery terminals, the vehicle started successfully, resolving the issue and clearing the engine light. This simple fix avoided a costly diagnostic fee at a workshop.

Yeah, the engine light is on, but no specific error code. Just says 'Engine control malfunction'. You really think it's just the battery cables? Seems too simple. Did yours give you the same error?

Yep, same error. Engine control malfunction. Cleaned and tightened the terminals, and it started right up. If that doesn't fix it, you might want to get it to a workshop to check the fuel injection or ECU. Could be engine software related but start with the basics.

You were spot on! Cleaned the battery terminals, tightened everything up, and she fired right up. Engine light's gone too. Workshop quoted me 155€ to diagnose, so you saved me a bunch. Thanks!

Sounds familiar. I had a similar problem with my Freemont. Check the battery cable connections are tight. That fixed it for me. Have you checked for any error messages on the dash?
