Corroded relay, eh? I didn't think about that. Where exactly IS that relay located on the Freemont? And how obvious was the corrosion on yours? Was it a complete mess, or something subtle?

On my Saab, it was in the fuse box under the hood, near the battery. Honestly, it looked like it had been swimming in the sea! Green crust everywhere. If you are not sure where to look for it, just go to the workshop.

I appreciate the insight. I'll just let the mechanic sort it. I'd rather not risk messing something else up. Just got the car back, and you were right - it was a corroded connector! 95€ well spent!

Sounds familiar! I had a similar gremlin with my old Saab 9-3. The symptoms were identical. Did you check the main power relay and its connections?
