Freestar exhaust back pressure sensor issue
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Ford Freestar exhibited warning lights and smoke during acceleration, leading to suspicion of an exhaust back pressure sensor issue. The problem was confirmed by another owner who experienced similar symptoms, including eventual hesitation in performance. The recommended solution was to have the sensor checked and replaced, which resolved the issue and restored smooth operation.

It's running okay, not rough. Just the light and the smoke, mostly when I really put my foot down. What exactly happened with yours?

Okay, mine did the same thing. Light and smoke, no performance issues at first. Then it started hesitating. I finally took it to a workshop and they said the exhaust back pressure sensor was shot. Seriously, you should get it checked out before it gets worse. This is an emission control thing, so you might not pass the next vehicle inspection.

Thanks for the heads-up! I appreciate the advice. I took it to the workshop. You were right – the exhaust back pressure sensor was defective. Cost me 245€ to repair. Now it runs smoothly!

Sounds familiar. I've got a Freestar too, and I had something similar happen last year. Is it running rough, or just the light and smoke?
