Freestar Stalling Fuel Pressure
Summary of the thread
The conversation centers around a 2003 Ford Freestar experiencing stalling and power loss, with the check engine light on. The initial suspicion was a faulty fuel pressure regulator, possibly exacerbated by a recent fuel filter change. A suggestion was made to check the fuel rail pressure using an OBD2 scanner. Ultimately, a visit to a local shop confirmed the defective fuel pressure regulator, resolving the issue.

Fuel rail pressure, huh? How exactly would I go about checking that? Is it something I can do with a regular OBD2 scanner, or do I need some fancy equipment? And could it really be THAT sensitive just from swapping out a filter? I thought it was a pretty straightforward job!

You can check the fuel rail pressure with a decent OBD2 scanner that reads live data. It's possible you disturbed something while changing the filter, or maybe the regulator was already weak and the filter change was just the last straw. If you are not familiar with the procedure, I would recommend a workshop. Otherwise you will damage more than just your wallet.

You were spot on! Took it to a local shop, and they confirmed it – fuel pressure regulator was indeed defective. Error entry after changing the fuel filter. 45€ later, and she's purring like a kitten again. Thanks a million for pointing me in the right direction!

Sounds familiar. I had similar issues with my Freestar after fiddling with the fuel system. Could be a faulty fuel pressure sensor after the filter change. Have you checked the fuel rail pressure? Rough idle and power loss definitely point in that direction.
