Freestyle belt tensioner failure
Summary of the thread
The conversation revolves around a 2007 Ford Freestyle experiencing a belt tensioner failure, where the belt handover is not functioning properly. The issue is suspected to be a defective belt tensioner, possibly exacerbated by a wobbling idler pulley. Ignoring the problem could lead to the belt slipping or breaking, potentially causing significant engine damage. The recommended solution is to have the tensioner replaced at a workshop, which was confirmed as necessary upon inspection.

I'll check the idler pulley for wobble. The car has 97200 km. What happens if I don't fix it right away?

At that mileage, the tensioner is probably just worn out. Ignoring it could cause the belt to slip or even break, which could mess up the timing and cause major engine damage. Sort of like ignoring a leaky faucet until the whole house floods. I would take it to a workshop.

Okay, thanks! I took it to the workshop, and you were right. Bad belt tensioner, 455€ to fix.

Sounds like a bad belt tensioner. Is the idler pulley also wobbling? If it is, that can stress the tensioner. I'd check that first. How many kilometers on it?
