Freestyle NOx Catalyst Aging and Exhaust Leak
Summary of the thread
The main issue discussed is a check engine light on a 2004 Ford Freestyle, with error codes indicating NOx storage catalyst aging and a suspected exhaust leak. The problem could be due to an exhaust system leak, potentially affecting the NOx catalyst. A similar case involved a cracked exhaust manifold, which led to catalyst issues. The suggested solution is to inspect for leaks and consult a mechanic to prevent further damage.

Thanks for the quick reply! It's not running rough, thankfully. Just the light and the leak are bugging me. When you had that similar issue, did it end up actually being the NOx catalyst itself, or something else causing the error code?

For me, it wasn't the catalyst itself, thankfully. Turned out I had a cracked exhaust manifold which was throwing everything off. Because I waited so long, the catalyst was sooted up. I ended up having to take it to a workshop to get it sorted out and cleaned up. My advice would be: take it to a mechanic that knows what they are doing and do not wait too long.

Appreciate the insight! Sounds like getting under there and really checking for exhaust leaks is the move before assuming the worst. I'm gonna have a good look this weekend and probably bite the bullet and take it to my trusted mechanic. He quoted me around 265€ to fix a leak in the exhaust system. Thanks again for your help!

I had something similar happen on my Freestyle, though I didn't check the mileage. Check Engine Light and all that. Is it running rough or anything, or just the light? I'd get under it and see if you can pinpoint that leak. Could be a simple fix, could be... not so simple.
