Freestyle Power Steering Problem
Summary of the thread
The 2007 Ford Freestyle experienced power steering issues, including difficulty steering and steering wheel vibrations. A potential cause identified was a faulty steering angle sensor, possibly due to bad coding. Symptoms included the traction control light activating and alignment issues after driving on uneven roads. The problem was resolved by diagnosing and replacing the steering angle sensor, which restored normal steering function.

Now that you mention it, the traction control light does come on sometimes. And I have noticed the alignment seems off after driving on uneven roads. Can you tell me more about your experience with the steering angle sensor? Did the problems start suddenly, or did they get worse over time?

The symptoms in my car showed up slowly. At first, just a little vibration. Then the steering got heavier, and the traction control light would come on randomly. Because of what you're seeing, I'm pretty sure it's a bad steering angle sensor. You should have a mechanic check it out to diagnose and replace the sensor.

Thanks for the help. I had it checked, and the diagnostic confirmed the steering angle sensor was bad, probably from faulty coding like I thought. The repair, including the new sensor and recalibration, cost 195€. The steering works perfectly now, and the vibrations are gone. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

Hello, The steering wheel of my 2001 Ford Focus petrol is stiff and squeaks only when starting, while I'm turning to get out of my parking space; afterwards the steering is normal when driving. Can you shed some light on the causes? Thank you

Start by checking the power steering fluid level. Low fluid can cause stiffness and noise when turning. If the fluid is low, inspect for any leaks around the power steering pump or hoses. Let me know how it goes or if you have any further questions!

I had similar symptoms in my Freestyle. Check the steering angle sensor; that might be it. Does your traction control light come on sometimes, or do you notice alignment problems after bumps? A bad angle sensor can cause those issues.
